Computer Viruses and Good Prevention Techniques

When you get sick, you feel horrible. Your pounding head and sore muscles reminding you that you should have been taking your vitamins. Through out your day simple tasks seem to take forever while other people are afraid of being around you, because they too might get sick. It should be no surprise that computers can suffer the same fate.

Computer viruses were not created by mother nature. The viruses you find on computers are created by people. People that either had malicious intent or were simply curious about how they work. There are thousands of computer viruses around today. A lot of those are mostly harmless and will not destroy your data. However, there are viruses that cost people millions of dollars in damage every year.

The main reasons for computer viruses spreading are ignorance and inaction. A lot of people using computers today in the office don't know much about viruses and how to prevent them. The majority of viruses spread around today are transmitted via email attachments. If you get an email with an attachment be very careful about opening it. If it's from someone you don't know or if it simply looks like something you've never seen before, don't open it. It may say it's harmless or a fun treat but it's probably not. You can always ask someone knowledgeable about it.

There is also a lot of people who just don't care and don't take any precautions to avoid being infected. If you work with one of these people and email them often, you are very likely to get a virus from them if they are infected and you're not protected.

If you don't have any virus scanning software on your computer I strongly suggest you get some. There are free virus scanning programs available on the Internet. Programs like AVG Anti-Virus are available free of charge. A simple Google search will provide your with several solutions.

If you work in an office and don't have any anti-virus software, contact the company IT manager and ask for some or ask if you can install some yourself. Many companies today will be happy to install anti-virus software. Doing so will save them money in the long run. A employee that can't work because the computer in down is not something they want.
